A compact growing annual that gets 8-12" tall & wide. The colorful blooms are large & showy. This plant gets its name from the way the flower buds are filled with air & 'pop' when you squeeze them.
Black Eyed Susan - Rudbeckia hirta
Great Florida Summer color! This variety of Rudbeckia only gets 1-2' tall & wide. The daisies are borne upon long stems that stick above the plant to give a taller color for any summer annual planting. Very drought tolerant once established so great in areas that dont get that much water.
Caladiums
Caladiums are the most colorful foliage you can buy as a summer annual. They are a tuber that goes dormant in the winter & regrows every spring. You do not need to dig them up every year like up north. Best in partial sun areas as the leaves grow larger & stay more colorful. MANY MANY different varieties of colors & sizes.
Coneflower Purple - Echinacea magnus
A great upright annual that gets 1-2' tall & wide. The flowers bloom on very long stems that reach above the main plant mass. Long lasting blooms & profuse amounts of them make this a great addition to any annual planting. If protected from weather extremes like severe cold & drought they can last as a biennial (Living for up to two years)
Coreopsis 'Early Sunrise'
A dense growing coreopsis variety that gets 1-2'tall & 1' wide. The yellow flowers are on long stems that grow in all directions & are produced in large amounts. Dorught tolerant once established in the ground.
Gazania Daisies
A short growing & compact little daisy. Only gets 6-8" tall & slowly spreads in a clump. The flowers are extremely profuse & come in many different shades of red, yellow, orange, white & pink. Great for borders & mass planting. This plant is also ideal for combination planters. Can live for a couple years if protected from freezing temperatures.
Pentas - Dwarf
Dwarf pentas are a compact variety that only gets 12" tall & wide. The flowers are small but are borne in large clusters that appear with frequency and abundance all summer long. They come in all sorts of colors of pink, red, white & purple. These can be grown as perennials if protected from freezing temperatures & dead-headed regularly.
Periwinkle - Vinca
A compact vinca that is often called the "Summer Impatien" because of its similarity in looks to the popular winter annual. Drought tolerant once they are established, I have personally seen these growing wild on Egmont Key. The varieties are wide ranging colors of white, purple, pink & red. Trim back to keep full & they can get up to 18" tall & wide.
Purslane
A succulent ground cover that only gets 6-8" tall but can spread up to 2' if not trimmed. The flowers are very bright & colorful & only open up during the day. Keep in well drained soil for best results. Can be grown as a perennial if protected from the winter frosts.
Scaevola
A fast growing ground cover that can reach up to 12" tall & 24" wide. The purple 'fan' shaped flowers are produced in very large amounts and with great frequency. Drought tolerant & salt tolerant once established this plant is great for mass plantings, hanging baskets & combination pots.
Sedum - Gold
A low groing succulent that can get up to 8" tall & 1-2' wide. There are no flowers of note to really speak of but the bright gold foliage is absolutely stunning. A great plant to use in hanging baskets or combination planters as a color variance. Keep in well drained soil for best results. Can be grown as a perennial if protected from freezing temperatures.
